Wild Coast

Wild Coast Hiking Trail and cultural experience (Eastern Cape)

1aWild_Coast_-_Catherdral_PeakSituated in the former Transkei (where Nelson Mandela comes from) the Wild Coast is a spectacular 280 km coastline of rolling hills, deserted beaches, giant waterfalls and unique rock formations The most interesting section of this hiking trail is a 6-day walk from the Msikaba Nature Reserve to the town of Port St Johns. This is a sub-tropical section of the trail and among the most outstanding natural features found along this stretch is Waterfall Bluff (containing two of the few waterfalls in the world that plunges directly into the ocean) and Cathedral Rock (an enormous free-standing rock formation with an archway carved through it by the never-ending onslaught of the waves). The Wild Coast hiking trail is also unique because it allows hikers the opportunity of social and cultural interaction with the various local communities on route. Most local people survive through subsistence farming which they might complement through catching seafood, like fish and mussels. We will spend at least one day and night at Mbotyi, a small village along the coast, to experience the cultural life of its inhabitants.
