Kabbo means dream in the Bushman or Hottentot language (the San or Bushmen were the original inhabitants of Southern Africa). Kabbo was also the name of a Nineteenth Century Hottentot leader who distinguished himself by resisting colonial encroachment onto the ancestral land of his people.
Kabbo, who was also a poet, storyteller, seer and very knowledgeable of the stars, expressed the wish that the poetry and stories of the Hottentot would be recorded to preserve the unique culture and history of his people.
Today most of this culture and history has been lost with only scattered and dwindling pockets of San and Hottentot in existence in Southern Africa. Their presence is still, however, felt by the ancient rock art they have left behind in virtually every mountain range in Southern Africa.
