West Coast Cultural Overland Tour

WEST COAST AND INLAND CULTURAL AND ADVENTURE OVERLAND TOUR (10 DAYS)

Day 1: Leave Cape Town for the Postberg Nature Reserve. This Reserve is renowned for its spectacular displays of spring flowers, dramatic rock formations and its breathtaking views of the tranquil lagoon on the one side and ocean on the other. Among the animals occurring here are springbok, eland, hartebeest, wildebeest and zebra. The nature reserve can be explored along several walking trails. Conservation officers also provide a talk on the ecology in the reserve.

We will overnight in the nature reserve.

DAY 2: Our first stop is at the West Coast fossil park where the remains of dinosaurs have been uncovered. From here we move on to Veldrift and finally on to Goedwerwagt, a small mission village, where we will overnight.

DAY 3: From Goedwervagt we travel to Wupperthal via the scenic Pakhuis Pass. Wupperthal is another quaint mission station where visitors can enjoy an enriching cultural, historical and social experience.

DAYS 4 – 6: We will spend the next 3 days hiking in the rugged Cedarberg mountains. (see cedarberg hike for a description of these mountains).

DAY 7: After our hike we travel to the small remote villages of Klawer and Loeriesfontein (where we will overnight).

DAY 8: From Loeriesfontein we head south again along an interesting canyon pass to another small town called Niewoudtville which is situated in the only true Mediterranean region in South Africa. Around Niewoudtville there are plenty of interesting natural sites to visit such as the Wild Flower Reserve, hosting 300 plant species and containing the richest concentration of geophytes (plants with bulbs, corms or tubers) in the world. There are also the glacial pavements, some 300 million years old, dating back to the Ice Age. After a picnic lunch at the Niewoudtville Waterfalls, we will spend the rest of the day exploring the Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve (see description of this area above). We will overnight at Niewoudtville.

DAY 9: After a lazy start to the morning we take a slow drive south to the Tankwa Karoo National Park, where we will spend the rest of the day and overnight.

DAY 10: From Tankwa we make our way back to Cape Town via Ceres and the scenic Bain’s Kloof Pass.

NOTE: We can alter the duration of this trip.
