MOUNTAIN & TOUR GUIDE AND ENVIRONMENTALIST

2HughSAs a young man, Hugh discovered solace in trips to the mountains, free from social, economic and political constraints. His passion for mountaineering and his desire to share this with especially the disadvantaged youth persuaded him to change his career from chemistry to mountain guiding and environmental education.

 

Qualifications and credentials:

  • Mountain Guide (registered with South African Mountain Guiding Association- SAMGA) Mountain walking and rock climbing.
  • Registered assessor, SAQA accredited
  • Registered tourist guide for the Western Cape.
  • Higher Diploma in Food Technology.
  • Member of Wilderness Search and Rescue as a volunteer and serves on the Technical and Training Committee.
  • Diploma in Business Management.

Mountaineering and Outdoor experience:

Hiked extensively through most of the wilderness areas in Southern Africa such as Cedarberg, Groot Winterhoek, Hawequas, Baviaans kloof, Northern and Southern Drakensberg, the Malutis in Lesotho and the Fish River Canyon in Namibia.

I have done various trails in Western Cape, Wild Coast in Transkei, Natal and in the Northern Cape. I have been active in mountaineering since 1978 to present day.

Rock climbing: I have been doing rock climbing since 1979 and am confident to lead climbs up to grade 20. I give instruction and assessing in rock climbing and mountain walking. I have done most of the traditional and sport routes in the Western Cape on Table Mountain and the surrounding mountains.

I have travelled as far as Kenya by motor-cycle and have climbed the Mulanges in Malawi, Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and have done some trekking on Mount Kenya.

I am a member of Cape Province Mountain Club since 1979 and serve on their executive for a number of years. Cape Province Mountain Club has been and still is a non-racial club since its inception in 1931 and has always been active in mountaineering.

Other activities I enjoy include kloofing, white water rafting, canoeing and caving.

Work experience in mountaineering and tourist guiding.

Organised and conduct mountaineering trips for tourists in South Africa- Eight day trip for UK tourists to Drakensberg mountains in 2000 and 2001 and a six-day trip to Cedarberg in 2002.

Took tourists on various day trips and rock climbing routes up Table Mountain and surrounding mountains in the Western Cape. I have worked as a safety officer for a BBC filming crew while they were filming part of a film in the Cape mountains.

I have conducted various tours throughout the Western Cape for tourists on single and multi-day trips. Have organised and led expeditions through the Fish River Canyon in Namibia for tourists and local hikers on five occasions and have done it with friends on four occasions.

Have worked as an assistant and as instructor in mountain walking and climbing for Cape Town School of Mountaineering. I work as a volunteer guide for Cape Peninsula National Park on Table Mountain in the Orange Kloof area and have a keen interest in the flora and fauna on the mountains.

I teach and conduct environmental field trips into the mountains for schools and youth groups.
