Groot Winterhoek

This area is so named because of its remoteness and unpredictable weather in summer or winter. Names of places such as De Tronk, Die Hel and the ruins of old farm houses are reminiscent of the hardships experienced by the early inhabitants who tried to eke out a living there. What makes this such a special area is the opportunity to walk up the high peaks (about 2000m high), swim in the rivers and be awed by Die Hel, an amazing place where the Vier-en-Twintig Riviere suddenly enters a gorge and drops as a sheer waterfall into a mysterious, cold dark basin surrounded by steep cliffs housing some hidden bushman paintings. Ideal for a weekend hike.
