Fish River Canyon (situated in Namibia)
Experience magnificent sunrises and sunsets with their beautiful shades of changing colours as it becomes light into a hot day or into a star-filled night sky that will enthrall even the most disinterested stargazer. This area takes you into geological history dating back to 2600 million years, making it the oldest canyon on Earth. While hiking through the canyon you are totally surrounded by the Fish River’s sensational wind and water-hewn sculptures, experiencing desert conditions in close proximity of a flowing river and the occasional reminder by the cry of the Fish Eagle that you are being observed from on high by a witness that has survived through the ages in an inhospitable environment. Many hikers come back year after year to repeat this hike and experience different conditions as a result of the changes brought about by the annual flooding of the river when it washes down in winter and others do it just to experience this phenomenon at least once in their lifetime. The length of the hike is approximately 86 kilometers and the walk can vary from 3-6 days but the recommended time is 5 days, giving the hiker enough time to savour the beauty of the canyon at a leisurely pace. Enjoy the natural hot springs at Ais-Ais with all the modern facilities and conveniences after the hike.
