Cedarberg

The Cedarberg Wilderness hike and cultural experience

Situated about 3 hours drive from Cape Town the rugged Cedarberg Mountains is one of South Africa’s premier hiking areas. There are numerous trails in this area, providing access to high mountain peaks, fascinating sandstone rock formations and scenic spots. The original inhabitants of the Cedarberg were the San or Bushmen who have left plenty of rock-art in the numerous mountain caves and overhangs. The Cedarberg is renowned for its exquisite sunsets and is also the home of the rare snow protea. Permit limitation of 12 people.

We conclude this hike with a cultural, social and historical component by spending a day and night in Wupperthal, a former mission station. Wupperthal is a quaint village where most people survive through subsistence farming or co-operative ventures such as manufacturing leather shoes. This is a warm and friendly community, keen to share their history and cultural life with visitors.
